Elves Amongst Hallucinogenic Landscapes

Terence McKennaTerence McKenna is one of my favorite philosophers and speakers of all time.  He studied and talked about a great deal of topics which have had a profound impact on the way I view reality and my own consciousness.

Listening to a full talk will have him exploring topics ranging from philosophy and language to mushrooms and native uses for plants.

In some of his talks, he mentioned the times that he smoked the pure form of the entheogen called DMT.  It is very difficult to pull out, or remember the trips, but Terence had a trick of combining multiple trips into a kind of amalgamation of information from the DMT space.

Here is a perfect two part description from one of Terence’s talks:

The Machine Elves visit…

It stands for dimethyltryptamine and is the most potent psychedelic known to man in its smoked form.  The interesting thing is that this neurotransmitter is also found all throughout nature and in the human body normally.

When he went into “the DMT space”, he says that he encountered entities.  He was never sure if they were extraterrestrials, human souls, or something else.  To me, that was one of his most important teachings.

This is the fact that hallucinogens show us that we don’t really know shit about reality or our own consciousness.  We think we do, but when we start to strip away our ego and all of the programming that we undergo every day, our Universe becomes much more strange and amazing.

Anyways, Terence called these little beings “Self Transforming Machine Elves”.  He said that they often bounded up to him and jumped in and out of his chest.  They also love to make impossible shapes and figures with their voices.

McKenna said that they urge you not to give in to astonishment and to learn from them.  He said that they bounce up to you and yell, “Look at this one!!”  For some reason, I always loved pondering the Machine Elves, and here are some of the ideas I have gathered from listening to many McKenna talks.

I even had a few run ins with Machine Elves in the MDMA, acid and Ketamine light realms as I like to think of the journeys of my early 20′s!

I Believe that the Machine Elves are Us and Here is Why:

  • We are all “self transforming” at all times.  Our minds and bodies are in a constant state of transformation.  When we decide on optimism and loving thoughts, it has been proven that these transform not only ourselves, but our surroundings as well.
  • Don’t we all create with our own language, too?  McKenna said that “the Universe is made of language”.  This is only true in the way that we humans interact with the Universe.  We use language.  We label and categorize.  We describe and complain.  It is the primary way that we all interact with our Universe.
  • I believe that a Self Transforming Machine Elf represents the infinity of possibilities at every point is space and time.  I believe Machine Elves are pure consciousness waiting to have an interaction with other levels of consciousness to see what arises.  As self reflecting beings ourselves, we are capable of very advanced manipulation of the Universe around us.
  • When we direct our intention and actions towards something, we manifest it in reality.  It goes along with the saying that, “believing is seeing”.

I believe each point in space and time holds infinite possibilities.  It seems like we are all here to learn and interact with the Machine Elves.  When we direct our positive loving intention at these beings, they become a major force of powerful positive change.

My Thoughts on Terence McKenna’s Timewave Zero

I am fascinated by Terence McKenna’s findings based on the ancient iChing. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Terence McKenna was a philosopher, ethnobotanist, and psychedelic explorer. His talks opened my mind to many possibilities.

His Timewave Zero theory was a fractal function derived from the book and practices of the King Wen sequence of the iChing.

It seems to be a wave which can arguably be linked to major events in human history. As the wave drops, he said that this is a time of more novelty. As the wave ascends, this was supposed to be a time of habit, or “back to the same”.

The amazing thing is that it runs down to complete “novelty” in conjunction with the new Mayan era at the end of 2012. This fact astounded him as it was derived without his knowledge of the Mayan prophecies.

When I see a graph with a line of time, I have to automatically include space along with the time axis since one is meaningless without the other.

I say this because when I see the Timewave Zero graph, it looks like many more points of data than simply time, habit, and novelty. This makes sense to me because the graph itself is a fractal.

This means that when you zoom in on certain points, the patterns on large scales are repeated on small scales of space/time.

So, why can’t the meanings be fractal as well?

To me, fractal oscillations along the graph can also be considered vibrations on the planet. This also makes sense to me because of the new strides being made in understanding the fractal geometry of our Universe and the increasing levels of energy planet wide, some say due to increased solar activity.

So, what would it mean for vibrations on the planet to go to a smooth line? Maybe, it will be a state of harmony within all of us. This also jives with the Mayan ideas of a coming golden age in which we re-learn to live in harmony with each other and the planet. This Awakening is happening everywhere and is why I built this site.

Also, a nice idea is that if the Timewave runs down to a time of maximum “novelty” then what would be the most novel event to take place for humans? In my mind, it would be world peace since that would be an unprecedented thing as opposed to millenia of slavery, war, rape, torture, etc., etc.

So, I have a lot of hope for the future and am diving headlong into this novelty in every moment!

Terence Mckenna’s Self Transforming Machine Elves

The late Terence Mckenna is one of my favorite philosopher/thinkers of all time. His lectures have the ability to both drive me temporarily insane or bring me a sense of inner peace!

One of my favorite phrases that he coined is in the intro to the Psychedelic Salon called the self transforming machine elves. This is the description he gave to the entities he encountered in the DMT deep psychedelic space. When I first heard it, I laughed out loud, but as I kept hearing him describe these things, they seemed to become more and more profound to me.

Whenever I get interested in a topic or phrase that someone coined, I start to think about the source of this information. Terenece was a great thinker, but most of all, he was a great story teller. He is often referred to as an “Irish bard”.

So, I thought about what the greatest story tellers do. To me, they embed multiple levels of meaning woven into a story. They create metaphors like most of us create snot, effortlessly! I think Terence even did this without him realizing it himself perhaps.

With this in mind, I started to see his self transforming machine elves as a metaphor for human beings and our imaginations.

As we grow up and move through time, we are transforming. There is no doubt about it. We are quite different than when we were a baby obviously!

With regard to the self transforming part, we are all in control of the thoughts which flow into our consciousness. We can choose to think positively. People are always self transforming in their own minds. We see ourselves how we want to. We can think negatively and hate and make scapegoats. We are the self transforming machine elves.

Terence also spoke of these elves’ ability to create any object out of language or thin air. Isn’t that we do as people. Aren’t we creators of things never seen on this planet? Don’t we make new words and languages constantly? How many computer languages have been constructed so far?

Another urge of these machine elves was that they desperately wanted to teach and share. He described them as yelling at him, “do this, look at this one, now look at this one” while creating.

Don’t we all do this to each other in every day life? Isn’t this what everyone who has ever taught anyone anything done? I would say yes.

Now, when I hear the term “self transforming machine elves” I think of this as a challenge for all people to look at themselves in this light. It is a suggestion that we can choose to be positive, creative and teach each other amazing new things.
